VIRAL STEAM HIDE-AND-SEEK GAME

MECCHA
CHAMELEON
PLAYER GUIDE

MECCHA CHAMELEON is a viral Steam hide-and-seek party game where you paint yourself into the map, fool your friends, and turn bad camouflage into comedy. This site is a growing collection of guides, maps, and multiplayer tips built to help you play better and laugh more.

Made by two indie developers in about two months, with no traditional marketing spend, and still crossed 10M+ Steam sales.

Instead of becoming a prop, you stay shaped like a little person and try to paint your body into the world around you. Sometimes you disappear perfectly. Sometimes you look terrible. Either way, that is the fun.

BUILT FOR CLIPS

Bad paint jobs, perfect hiding spots, fake hunters, and last-second escapes make every round easy to share.

THE CANVAS

YOU ARE NOT CHOOSING A PROP. YOU ARE PAINTING YOURSELF.

Hiders do not simply transform into chairs, boxes, or random props. They start as plain white characters and have to paint themselves to match the environment before the hunters find them.

THE FUN COMES FROM BOTH GENIUS AND DISASTER

There is no single correct way to hide. You either look like a magic trick, or you fail so loudly that the failure becomes the clip.

BAD PAINTING

Bad painting is part of the joke.

Wrong color, half-painted body, terrible pose. In another game that is failure. Here it becomes the story.

Art gallery hiding spot
ART WIZARD

Good players can turn hiding into art.

Players blend into paintings, textures, and scenery so well they stop being a character and start being scenery.

Fake hunter mind game
MIND GAME

You can fool people without hiding perfectly.

Paint yourself white and behave like a hunter. Confidence can be camouflage too.

Absurd hiding idea
EXPERIMENT

Every bad idea is worth testing.

Hide, run, bluff, pose, clone, or stand in plain sight. If it tricks hunters, it worked.

FROM DISASTER PAINT JOBS TO MONA LISA HIDING SPOTS

The same mechanic creates both comedy and skill expression. New players make disasters. Great players make magic.

Failed camouflage

FOR BAD PAINTERS

You do not need to be good at drawing. Bad camouflage is one of the game’s best sources of comedy.

  • The wrong shade of wall color.
  • A half-painted body before the timer runs out.
  • A pose that still looks obviously human.
  • One bright limb sticking out from behind a prop.
  • A serious hiding attempt that looks ridiculous in the reveal.
Great camouflage

FOR GREAT PAINTERS

Skilled players match colors, copy artwork, use shadows, and make their bodies feel like part of the scene.

  • Blending into paintings.
  • Matching complex wall textures.
  • Using shadows and perspective.
  • Turning a hiding spot into a small art performance.
  • Recreating famous images such as the Mona Lisa.

THE MOMENTS THAT EXPLAIN THE GAME

Art-gallery style hiding spot

THE MONA LISA HIDERS

What happened: Players were recreating the Mona Lisa as the game passed 7 million sales.

Why it matters: The painting system can become a canvas for creative players.

Fake hunter hiding in plain sight

THE FAKE HUNTER

What happened: A player painted themselves white and behaved like a hunter.

Why it matters: The game is about expectations, confidence, and psychological misdirection.

THE 10M+ INDIE SHOCK

What happened: A two-person team made the game in about two months, spent no traditional marketing budget, and crossed 10M+ Steam sales.

Why it matters: The idea is instantly readable, and every round can produce a funny moment.

FRIENDS TURN EVERY ROUND INTO A STORY

The game gets funnier when the lobby knows each other: the bad painter, the corner-checker, the fake hunter, the impossible survivor.

"A terrible paint job is much funnier when your friends are the ones judging it."

Customizable chaos

THERE IS NO SINGLE CORRECT HIDING SPOT.

The funniest rounds happen when players stop looking for the “correct” answer and start trying weird ideas.

Hide in a dark corner.
Stand in plain sight and trust the paint.
Blend into a painting or poster.
Use trash, balloons, cakes, furniture, or wall patterns.
Move when a hunter gets too close.
Change spots mid-round.
Use poses to break up your silhouette.
Use clones to create extra risk and confusion.
Act like you belong somewhere you clearly do not. If it works, it worked.

WORKSHOP

MORE MAPS MEAN MORE WAYS TO MESS WITH PEOPLE

Every new map adds new colors, textures, props, sightlines, shadows, and hiding logic.

Official map appeal

Offices, mansions, countryside props, city streets, hotels, sewers, candy worlds, and other cluttered spaces.

Workshop appeal

Custom galleries, restaurants, markets, meeting rooms, and pools create new surfaces to copy and new hiding ideas to test.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM PROP HUNT?

PROP HUNT

  • You become an existing prop.
  • The joke is picking the right object.
  • Failure means choosing a bad prop or bad spot.
  • High-skill play is map and prop knowledge.
  • Hunters look for suspicious objects.

MECCHA CHAMELEON

  • You paint your own body into the scene.
  • The joke is painting, posing, bluffing, and hoping nobody notices.
  • Failure can mean a hilarious paint disaster.
  • High-skill play is color matching, body positioning, mind games, and creativity.
  • Hunters look for suspicious shapes, colors, shadows, and behavior.
Prop Hunt asks what object you became. MECCHA CHAMELEON asks whether you can make everyone believe you belong there.

YOU WILL PROBABLY LIKE IT IF...

  • You like party games with friends.
  • You enjoy Prop Hunt-style chaos.
  • You like goofy multiplayer clips.
  • You enjoy creative hiding, drawing, bluffing, or improvising.
  • You want failure to be as funny as winning.
  • You stream or play viewer-participation games.

MAYBE NOT FOR YOU

  • You only want serious competitive multiplayer.
  • You prefer polished AAA interfaces and matchmaking.
  • You do not enjoy social multiplayer.
  • You only want solo story content.
  • You get annoyed when teammates choose chaos over optimal play.
